What to Expect During Your First Massage: A Beginner's Guide
If you've never had a professional massage before, it's completely normal to feel a little nervous. You might wonder what to wear, how much clothing to remove, whether your body will be exposed, or what actually happens during a massage.
At Morning Sun Massage & Spa in North Liberty, Iowa, we've welcomed countless first-time massage clients over the years. As a licensed massage therapist, I've found that many people share the same concerns.
And one of the things I hear most often afterward?
"I wish I hadn't waited so long to get a massage!"
That's why I wanted to share what you can expect during your first massage, answer some common questions, and help you feel confident walking into your appointment.

What to Expect During Your First Massage: Arriving at the Spa
At Morning Sun Massage & Spa, we're open by appointment only, so our front door remains locked. Simply ring our doorbell, and your massage therapist will greet you.
Something that makes our spa experience more personal is that your therapist takes care of you throughout your entire visit, from greeting you to checkout.
You're not passed from one person to another. The therapist who welcomes you is the same person who performs your massage and helps you afterward.
We believe this personal connection helps clients feel more comfortable, especially during their first visit.
Your Intake Form and Consultation
If you haven't completed your intake form before arriving, your therapist will have you complete it first.
This form provides important information about your health, areas of discomfort, and goals for your massage.
Next, your therapist will take you to your treatment room for a brief consultation.
We'll discuss things like:
Areas of muscle tension or discomfort
Your preferred massage pressure
Whether you're seeking relaxation, stress relief, or focused muscle work
Areas you'd like us to concentrate on or avoid
Questions or concerns about your massage
Every massage should be tailored to the individual receiving it. Even our regular clients have a consultation at every appointment because their needs can change from one visit to the next.
What Should You Wear to Your First Massage?
This is one of the most common questions I hear from first-time clients.
You can wear your regular, comfortable clothing to your appointment. There's no special outfit required.
Once you're in the treatment room, your therapist will explain how to prepare for your massage, including how to get onto the table and whether you'll begin face up or face down.
They'll then leave the room so you can undress privately.
Do You Have to Undress Completely?
Absolutely not!
You should always undress to your personal comfort level.
Some clients prefer to undress completely, while others leave their underwear on. Both are perfectly acceptable.
Some women prefer to leave their bras on, and we can certainly work around that. However, in my experience, removing your bra generally allows for a more comfortable and effective massage, especially when working on the back and shoulders.
Ultimately, the decision is yours. You should never feel pressured to remove more clothing than you're comfortable with.
Will My Body Be Exposed During a Massage?
This is another common concern, and one I completely understand.
Professional massage therapists are trained in proper draping techniques that protect your privacy throughout your session.
At Morning Sun Massage & Spa, you'll be covered with a sheet and blanket during your massage.
How Does Draping Work?
Only the area being massaged is uncovered.
For example, if your therapist is working on your right leg, that leg will be uncovered as needed while the rest of your body remains covered.
When that area is finished, your therapist covers it again before moving to another part of your body.
We use professional draping techniques to ensure private areas remain appropriately covered throughout your massage.
Your therapist also leaves the room while you undress before your session and while you get dressed afterward.
Your comfort, privacy, and dignity are always priorities.
Please Don't Worry About How Your Body Looks
If there's one thing I wish every first-time massage client understood, it's this:
We are not judging your body!
Over my years as a massage therapist, I've heard clients apologize for things that genuinely don't matter to us.
Maybe they didn't shave their legs. Maybe they're uncomfortable about their weight, body shape, scars, or stretch marks.
Please don't let those concerns keep you from enjoying a massage.
Massage therapists work with people of all shapes, sizes, ages, and body types. We're not evaluating your appearance.
We're focused on your muscles, areas of tension, comfort, and providing the best massage for your needs.
I've had so many clients tell me they avoided getting a massage because they felt self-conscious about their bodies.
Afterward, they're often surprised by how comfortable they felt and how much they enjoyed the experience.
It makes me wish they'd given themselves the opportunity sooner.
What Happens During Your Massage?
After your consultation, your therapist will explain how to get onto the massage table. They'll leave the room while you undress and settle comfortably underneath the sheet and blanket.
When they return, your massage begins.
How Much Pressure Should You Expect?
Before your session, your therapist will discuss your preferred pressure and what you'd like to accomplish.
Generally, we begin with lighter pressure while applying massage cream or oil and warming up the muscles.
We gradually work into deeper pressure based on your preferences and how your body responds.
Your therapist will check in to make sure the pressure feels right.
Here's something important to remember: Different areas of your body may need different amounts of pressure.
You might enjoy deeper pressure on your back but prefer lighter pressure on your legs or shoulders. That's completely normal!
Should a Massage Hurt?
A massage should never be something you feel you have to endure.
Some areas of muscle tension may feel tender, especially during deeper or more focused work. However, there's a difference between comfortable, therapeutic pressure and pressure that's simply too painful.
If something hurts or feels uncomfortable, please tell your therapist. We can adjust the pressure at any time.
Good communication between you and your massage therapist is one of the most important parts of a great massage experience.
Is It Okay to Talk During Your Massage?
Absolutely!
Some clients enjoy chatting with their therapist, while others prefer to close their eyes and enjoy the quiet.
There's no right or wrong way to enjoy your massage, and you never need to make conversation just to be polite.
However, I always encourage clients to speak up when something needs adjusting.
Please let your therapist know if:
The pressure is too light or too deep.
An area feels uncomfortable.
You're too warm or too cold.
You'd like additional attention on a particular area.
You'd prefer an area to be avoided.
You have questions about anything happening during your session.
Your therapist wants you to have a wonderful experience, and your feedback helps make that possible.
Remember, this is YOUR massage!
What Happens After Your Massage?
When your massage is complete, your therapist will let you know your session has ended and leave the room so you can get dressed privately.
Take your time getting up, especially if you're feeling deeply relaxed.
Once you're ready, you'll meet your therapist for checkout.
At Morning Sun Massage & Spa, your therapist handles your payment and can help you schedule another appointment if you'd like.
Some clients feel incredibly relaxed afterward, while others notice less muscle tension or improved comfort with movement.
You may experience mild muscle soreness following a massage, particularly if you're new to massage or received deeper work.
Everyone responds differently, and your therapist can answer questions about what to expect afterward.
Tips for Making Your First Massage a Great Experience
A few simple things can help you feel more prepared:
Complete your intake form ahead of time. This helps your therapist understand your needs.
Arrive a few minutes early. Give yourself time to settle in without feeling rushed.
Ask questions. There are no silly questions when it comes to your comfort.
Be honest about pressure. Let your therapist know what feels good and what doesn't.
Don't worry about your appearance. We're here to help you feel better, not judge how you look.
Speak up when needed. Your therapist can make adjustments throughout your massage.
Allow yourself to relax. You don't need to know exactly what to do. We'll guide you through everything.
Why So Many First-Time Clients Wish They'd Tried Massage Sooner
One of the most rewarding parts of being a massage therapist is watching someone experience their first professional massage and realize how much they enjoy it.
I've had countless clients tell me they wish they hadn't waited so long.
Sometimes they were nervous about undressing or feeling vulnerable. Others were self-conscious about their bodies or simply didn't know what to expect.
But once they experience a professional massage in a comfortable, welcoming environment, those worries often disappear.
Many go on to become regular massage clients because they've discovered how enjoyable and beneficial massage can be.
After years of providing massage therapy, that's something I never get tired of hearing.
My advice? Don't let nervousness or uncertainty keep you from experiencing something that could become one of your favorite ways to take care of yourself.
